Convergence ahoy! HP's MediaSmart HDTV (Model SLC3760N), first announced at CES in January and just becoming available, turns your living-room television into the supreme commander of all your digital media. Once you've connected it to your home network — either via an Ethernet connection or Wi-Fi — you'll be able to stream your digital photos, music, and videos straight to the 37-inch LCD screen. And if you feel like getting that tune from the commercial you just saw, the set is made to easily connect to online media services, so you can download right from your couch. The product page makes no mention of regular Web surfing, but you'd need a keyboard for that anyway, and HP doesn't provide one. Will the HP MediaSmart set win over convergence fans? For $2,700, the sexy flat-panel has an outside shot.

HP has very little value in this product. only media server and administration software makes it different from other entry-level SOHO servers. But in this area, MS hat a lot to catch up.
I’ve tried and tested at my home several MS media server solutions, starting from Media Connect 2.0 and Media Player 11, which has Media Connect 3.0 in his belly.
Problem with MS media servers is that they are really slow and resource (CPU and RAM) demanding. Forget runing them on old Cel PC, beefed up with large HDD as home server. Music interrupts and navigating in huge collections is pain
My favourite media server, having tried many, is TwonkyMedia from TwonkyVision. Good navigation help thanks to Artist Index and Album Index, plus small footprint. Recommended!

I applaud HP for their innovation in the HP MediaSmart HDTV. It is nice to see someone step out and provide something different. I recently found an interactive site about their tv at www.yankthewires.com
