E-paper smart cards make online theft harder

smartcards.jpgNew e-paper technology is making its way into credit cards, making it safer to make online transactions. By putting a small display in the card itself, a Smart Card can generate a unique number at the push of a button. That number can then be entered with your normal credit card number when making an online purchase, proving you have the actual card and making it impossible for the number to be used again if intercepted online. While the Smart Card technology won't stop people from using your card if they steal the actual card itself, it will certainly make it much harder for the online boogeymen to rip off online shoppers. SiPix, the company developing the technology, hopes to have the number generators to banks and credit card companies by years end, so hopefully we'll be seeing this new level of protection implemented in the near future.

This card will probably be the presursor to a large number of applications. Imagine having a screen on a credit card and think of the amount of data that could be set up on that card. The mind boggles.
