We've been big on next-generation cars lately, but haven't talked all that much about the innovations that will power these vehicles of the future. Well, Siemens VDO is looking far down the road at how automobiles will change, and they see their eCorner technology changing the way cars are designed. Stuffing the drivetrain, steering, shock absorbers and brakes directly into the wheels, the new tech will clear up loads of room in future fuel cell and electric cars. Increased maneuverability will result from having each wheel propel itself, and replacing current suspension with hydraulic shocks should greatly increase efficiency, allowing vehicles to go a lot longer on a single charge. This stuff is pretty far off — 15 years, according to Siemens VDO — but it's certainly an interesting peek at what we can expect to see under the hood… er, under the hubcap in the future.
