EA VP: Wii to cost $170. Geeks: OMG!!!

wiiThe Nintendo gang's plan to keep themselves in the news by not unveiling the price of their anticipated Wii console until the last possible moment is working out splendidly, with every guess at a price by a significant player in the gaming biz treated as a news story. Well, who are we to claim to be above it all? EA vice president and COO David Gardner expects the Wii to retail for a jaw-droppingly low $170 in Japan when it's released… sometime later this year. Yeah, we don't know the date either, but my money is on November 6th. Anyhow, Nintendo has gone on record saying the Wii won't cost more than $250, but $170 is a completely insane price. To put that price in perspective for you, adjusted for inflation the old SNES console cost over $280 — even without accounting for inflation it cost $200 when it came out 15 years ago. At $170 you could buy three Wiis and a couple games for the price of just one PlayStation 3. Of course, before we get our panties bunched up any tighter let's remember that this is yet another rumor, so don't be surprised when it turns out to be total bunk. But gee whiz, what if it isn't?
