Herbie fans rejoice! VW develops self-driving car

selfdrivingcar_w.jpg

Taking some inspiration from Herbie the Love Bug, Volkswagen has developed a self-driving Golf GTi and named it the "53+1" in homage to the adorable sentient Beetle's racing number. Developed by VW engineers and Lindsay Lohan, the fancy GTi is able to drive itself around at speeds of up to 150 mph, and GTi comes loaded with radar and laser sensors as well as GPS navigation to sense where it is and where it should be going. It works great on a test track, although we get the impression that little 53+1 would get eaten alive if let loose on a highway with human drivers cutting it off and giving it the finger. However, it's pretty remarkable that this technology exists, and it's only a matter of time before these features slowly make their way into production models. Just make sure you keep the "attack pedestrians" switch in the off position at all times, as they're still working the kinks out of that one.

Finally some progress only 10 years after some students built a van capable of driving across the US by itself.
