Toshiba unleashes HD DVD recorder with 1-TB disk

Buying an HD DVD player is all well and good, but you can't help getting the feeling something bigger and way better is just around the corner when you plunk your five hundy down for one of the new players. Well, take a peek around that corner: the Toshiba RD-A1 HD DVD recorder with a 1-terabyte hard disk. Yes, we said recorder, and yes, 1 TB. While HD DVD recorders have been available as PC components for a little while now, this is the first time it's come as a home theater component. This baby will allow you not only to watch HD DVDs in full 1080p glory, but also to record high-definition content onto blank single-layer (15-GB) and dual-layer (30-GB) disks as well as to the gigantic hard drive inside. The hard drive will be able to hold a solid 92 hours of HDTV shows or a whopping 72 days of standard-def video, so you probably won't worry about running out of room. Even if you're an obsessive packrat with season passes to every version of CSI and Law & Order, you'll be able to burn your favorite shows onto HD DVD for safekeeping, freeing up that disk space. Unfortunately, much like Godzilla, this monster is coming only to the shores of Japan, set to drop for a meaty $3,464, but we wouldn't be surprised if it made its way over here eventually. We'll keep you posted.
