"Personal" supercomputer should run Vista okay

tyan_typhoon_w.jpg

Typical Internet and office functions are more than ably handled by relatively cheap computers these days, but a personal supercomputer would still come in handy for scientific applications that need to crunch serious numbers in a reasonable amount of time. They're also good for compensating for things rich guys feel inadequate about. If you're more of a shame-filled millionaire than a research-minded scientist, this Tyan Typhoon "personal" supercomputer has your name written all over it. The 16-core (!) computer comes loaded with a whopping 48 GB of RAM and 8 dual-core Xeon processors. If you're a serious gamer looking to get 1,000 frames per second in World of Warcraft you'd be wise to point your platinum card elsewhere, however, as this is no gaming rig. It comes with a mere 16 MB of graphics processing — just enough to power your game of Solitaire while you analyze those genetic sequences. If you've got more serious needs for all this power, by all means, get on board, as there aren't too many other options for computers with this type of power aimed at (relatively) regular Joes. The Typhoon will be released this fall with a starting price tag of $10,000.

surely all that processing power would more than compensate for a crappy video card--what else is a video card anyway besides an expansion board with a separate processor and ram of its own

What a load of crap should be made for graphics as well
it would sell better

Video games would not run well on this computer for the simple fact that pc games are not yet designed for multiple processors, and the graphic components of the computation are all routed through the video card regardless of it's power.

Nobody in their right minds would buy this machine to play games on.

First of all is there are a lot of games compared to the "old Days" when if there was a format change it took 5 Patches and some programmer who was into the game to make it work correctly on your system.
With the advancements in shaders and other aspects of the newer video cards run the games now with that power there is possibly a way to use some of that huge processing power and Memory to compensate for the lacking video but then there isn't a way to output it so either way we already have the support and if you blow up the picture there are (Card Risers) all it will take is a "low-profile Card" and you would be able to run several instances of each of the 64 Bit compatible games.

Here are what i know of, feel free to psot more if you know them.

Age of Empires III

Battlefield 2

Battlefield 2: Special Forces

Black & White 2

Call of Duty 2

City of Villains by NCSoft

F.E.A.R. by Vivendi (allegedly enabled, but real world no real performance increase to FPS, tho it still performs)

Peter Jackson?s King Kong

Quake 4

Quake 5 (promised when released)

Serious Sam 2 by Croteam

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (on pre-order)

The Movies

Tom Clancy?s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter

Tom Clancy?s Rainbow Six 3

Tony Hawk?s American Wasteland

Vangauard Saga of Heros

World of Warcraft

Iguess it takes a Geek to notice things like that but its always nice ot have a rig maxed so you can play the biggest and best games.

A)most of what you said makes no sense
B)cpu's have nowhere the video processing ability of a gpu/vpu

By scorchmark at 10:25 AM ON 06/16/06

Ok on the making sense I said it as plainly as possible if the format changes in the Dos days it would not get fixed ad soon as now days. Back then it may of been months for a fix.
Thus tools like "slowmo" (slows the cpu clock cycles) and many others.
For us that have a lacking video card they make "Tatnium Injector" which uses the cpu "Hyper Threading" to make the game think it is one of those $500.00 dollar cards.
As far as the output thing there is more than 1 way to output a video source so in all essence you can make anything happen with enough money and or thought all I was saying.

According to the Vista beta testing site I have checked out the above supercomputer will not work with any form of Vista because it does not have the minimum requirement of a 64 MB video card to run the 3D desktop, I am pretty sure this requirement is increased to 128 MB card in the event of an on-motherboard built in card. I am assuming even with 64 MB video card it would run poorly. Also please check your definition of Super-Computer. Under the true definition we have all had super computers as desktop units for many years now.
The basic requirments for Vista basically equall a good gaming machine due to the 3D effects. This will push buyers of new computers to spend even more.. and I hope like hell Microsoft loses even more market share to Linux based on this soon to be released way over bloated operating system.

Peace
Rich
