Linksys webcam: keeping watch through the Net

WVC200_w.jpg

Are you like me? Do you lock up your house every morning with a hint of nervous trepidation that today could be the day some thief decides to break in? You can allay some of those fears by setting up a webcam to keep watch, and those cams don't come much more high-tech than the space helmet-resembling Linksys WVC200. Not only is the camera wireless, sending its video evidence to a separate hard disk via Wi-Fi, but you can also pan and zoom the camera remotely. Just log on to the live video stream from work (the cam has its own IP address, making it easy to set up for viewing through the Net), and you can check in on your collection of antique coke bottles whenever you want. Up to 10 different users can log into the video feed at the same time. You can even tell the camera's software to alert you via e-mail when it detects motion. If your dog likes to wander around the house, you might want to leave that feature off, but if you own a dog, what do you need a webcam guard for anyway? But for the petless, peace of mind costs $299.
