Simulating surround sound from a pair of front speakers — or even a single speaker — is nothing new, but the just-released Sharp SD-SP10 system ($350) uses Dolby's latest audio technology to get as close as possible to the performance of a traditional 5.1-channel system. This "1.1" system consists of two parts: a main unit that houses the speakers and amplifiers (shown on the right), plus an external subwoofer. The SD-SP10 is the first piece of gear to use Dolby's new Audistry technology, Sharp says, developed to enhance the audio performance of playback equipment typically known for limited audio capabilities: TVs, MP3 players, and even cell phones. The SD-SP10 also features Sharp's 1-bit audio technology, which can sample signals at an ultra-high speed that's 127 times faster than a CD. The faster rate allows for more accurate reproduction of fast, percussive sounds. So in other words you can get something close to full, rich surround sound without having to drag wires all over the room.
