The translator option isn't exactly as high-tech as you might expect, as it connects callers to a third-party company (Language Line), who then gets a real, live translator on the line for you. The service costs $2.99 per minute, so it's probably best to have concise conversations, as really long ones might cost more than actually learning the language in question.
