What will our cities look like as technology progresses? Will space constraints mean we build up rather than out? Will new materials change the way buildings are designed? These are some questions asked — and answered — by the Future City: Experiment and Utopia in Architecture 19562006 exhibit at the Barbican Art Gallery in London. Nearly 70 architects and designers have work showcased at the exhibit, including such starchitects as Rem Koohaas and Daniel Libeskind, with concepts ranging from the modest and realistic to over-the-top fantasy. Take a look at this image of RAGNITZ by Eilfried Huth & Günther Domenig, a multi-tiered, sprawling design that looks like a space-age floating oil rig. The exhibit opens June 15th and will run through September 17th, so if you happen to be across the pond this summer be sure to check it out.
