A Dartmouth College professor has developed a film that, when applied to an object, melts ice on its surface almost instantly. When given short bursts of electricity, the film dissolves two of the three bonds that make ice stick so strongly to surfaces, a process that would make de-icing airplane wings much easier. Furthermore, the process can be reversed to make ice stick even stronger than normal — handy for activities like ski racing. The automatically de-icing windshield may not be too far off.… NASA rocket scientists have announced they play to build a permanent moon base on the lunar South Pole by 2020. The pole was chosen for the potential frozen water that may be at the bottom of its deepest craters, a substance not only useful for sustaining life but also for producing rocket fuel. The base could be used for both research as well as a launching pad for eventual missions to Mars.… Microprocessor maker AMD is pushing hard in its lawsuit against rival Intel, subpoenaing 32 computer companies that deal with Intel, including Microsoft. AMD alleges that Intel has been using unfair business practices to keep AMD chips out of computers. Companies such as HP, Dell, Best Buy, and Circuit City have all been subpoenaed in the case. If victorious, AMD is looking to get a much larger piece of Intel's 86% market share in the microprocessor market.
