French Web site Inpact Virtuel is reporting that Sega is planning on releasing a new handheld console, currently called Hedgehog, early next year. It will include both a touchpad and a joystick, combining the control mechanisms of the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. The games would come on a cartridge, not a disc, and there will be a USB port so presumably you'll be able to put your music and videos on it, too. The Hedgehog will be able to emulate older Sega hardware as well as play movies, though we sure hope the movies don't come on cartridge à la Sony's nearly failed UMD format for the PSP. Details are hazy, with only this conceptual sketch of the design available right now (although the drawing does seem to bear some resemblance to the departed Dreamcast). Reportedly Sega is spending a lot of time making the Hedgehog energy efficient to avoid the battery troubles that have plagued portables like the iPod. Look for more news, possibly in English, on the Hedgehog in the coming months.
UPDATE: Oops, we got fooled. This is actually an April Fool's prank by our friends over at Inpact Virtuel. We apologize for any confusion.
