Microsoft has patented technology to allow instant messaging on televisions during regular viewing. Splitting the screen up into multiple frames, it would allow you to watch My Super Sweet 16 while simultaneously chatting with a friend about, say, the downfall of American culture. Using the Internet while watching TV is nothing new, as shows like American Idol and TRL have been encouraging users to use the Net to actively participate in decisions made on-air. With Media Center PCs looking to combine the PC and the TV in people's living room, such convergences are likely to become more commonplace in the future. Time will tell whether viewers will value the convenience of ditching the laptop enough to give up precious screen real estate for chatting.
