Samsung says they've invented a fuel cell that could more than double battery life in your cell phone or iPod. Announced Tuesday, the methyl alcohol-operated fuel cells will allow for eight hours of mobile-phone use and between two and four hours of video play on portable media players, depending on the wattage of your player. Samsung, which plans to mass produce the methyl batteries for your portable by late 2007 or early 2008, is reaching for the carrot in the methyl-alcohol race, also having announced a laptop fuel cell in November last year. The one drawback about methyl batteries is they aren't rechargeable. So every time your media player runs out of juice, you'll have to buy a refill, which Samsung says will be about the price of a disposable lighter. — Trevor Noren
