Remember the days when online bad boys were just trying to push nude celebs or sell you penis-enlarging herbs? The times, they are a-changin'. California native Jeanson James Ancheta pleaded guilty to a 14-month hacking spree with a net gain of $61,000. Prosecutors called the case the first in which a hacker has used hijacked computers, also known as "botnets," for profit. Ancheta took control of hundreds of thousands of Internet-connected computers, including two on US military bases, pulled them into a "zombie" network, and then rented them to gangs for mass spamming and attacks on various Web sites. For creating his cyber army, Ancheta faces four to six years in prison and will have to forfeit a 1993 BMW and more than $75,000 in fines and profits. Unfortunately, the Net's no longer a forum for just identity thieves and perverts your PC may get recruited into an electronic undead legion, silently spitting out spam.
